SoCalOps Model Railroad Operations Event in Southern California

The SoCalOps-2018 model railroad operation event weekend will be held on Thursday 6/7/18 through Saturday 6/9/18 (Main Event Sessions) in the Greater Los Angeles Area.  Limited Bonus Sessions  are planned for Wednesday evening 6/6/18 and Sunday morning 6/10/18.  The participating SoCal home layout owners, clubs and local helpers hope you will join us for an enjoyable and interesting weekend of operating sessions, clinics, layout tours and other events.  Over a dozen layouts are currently planned to participate in SoCalOps-2018.  In addition to the layout schedule listed above, clinics are planned at the hotel on Thursday evening, a no host dinner is planned for early Friday evening (More info on Dinner link)..  Layout tours are planned for Saturday night.

The early June time frame was selected for SoCalOps for 3 primary reasons: 1) Weather - The typical high temperature for the inland valley areas is the low/mid 80s (with low humidity); with lows in the mid 50s.  Coastal / basin areas have typical highs in the low/mid 70s with lows in low/mid 50s.  A "June Gloom" early to late morning fog can blanket the area this time of year, 2) Traffic - Most SoCal colleges have completed their spring sessions, resulting in a non-trivial reduction in traffic.  Many layouts in the LA Basin / Orange County areas have been scheduled for Saturday to reduce driving time and 3) Conflicts - No other ops event weekends in the Western US are scheduled in the early June time frame.

SoCalOps-2018 is a fourth time event.  The initial SoCalOps was held in 2012 with 5 layouts and about a dozen attendees.  SoCalops-2014 had 9 layouts with about two dozen attendees, 2016 had 18 layouts with .

It is suggested you plan to arrive no later than Wednesday evening and depart no earlier than Saturday evening.  For those flying in, the closest airports are Burbank (BUR) or Los Angeles International (LAX).  Simi Valley, where the event / central hotel is located, is a stop for both Amtrak's Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner as well as the Metrolink commuter trains (Mon - Fri).  The hotel is about 6 miles (10 min) from the Amtrak/Metrolink station.

Hotel accommodations have been arranged at $99 plus taxes per night including a full breakfast and an evening drink.
